The Underground Museum was open in November, 1967 by its enthusiasts - the labour veterans of underground who had been collecting its future exhibits: documents, photos and models of various equipment. To create the funds the used were the materials from the Underground Department, State Archives of Kino and Photo Documents, Russian State Library and various retired equipment. Many documents and individual items are the gifts to the museum by pravate persons.

    The exposition is so arranged that to show the Underground emergence history and development up to now to the utmost. The unique exhibits demonstrate the labour feat of those who created this engineering and architectural wonder and who ensured its functioning. On the exhibition, the presented are another sections: "The Underground during The Great Patriotic War: transport and bombproof shelter", "The Underground as an Architectural Memorial", "The Commonwealth of Underground in Russia, CdS's countries and other states world-wide".
