Description:
    This, the first Russian Zoo, was opened in 1864, and now has 5150 animals and 960 different breeds. Today the zoo carries out conservation, educational and scientific research and participates in a number of International Breeding Programs. More than 80 species of endangered animals, for example trumpeter swans and white - naped cranes, are breeding successfully in the very centre of this giant industrial city. The zoo also holds regular excursions and lectures.
