The Museum of Local History in Strezhevoy was founded in 1981 upon the decision of the town's administration as a public museum of local history of oil and gas recovery in the North of Tomsk region. In 1984 the Museum became an affiliation of the Tomsk United State Museum of History and Architecture (The Shatilov Museum). In 1990 the town's administration decides to turn the affiliation into an independent establishment. It's then when the Museum got its name, which exists up to now. In 2004 the Museum got its juristic status. In July 2012 the Museum joined the Municipal Budget Establishment of Culture called "Multifunctional Socio-Cultural Complex".

    The Museum is visited mostly by schoolchildren. The retired and handicapped visitors are treated with utmost care. The specific features of the museum collection are taken into consideration when different arrangements are organized. The possibility to visit the museum to learn something new and interesting on regular basis is realized through the cultural and educational programs such as "Taiga Tales", "Play and Learn", "Country House and its Belongings", "The Tomsk Region's Folks' Culture", "In Alliance with Nature", "Strezhevoy is a Town upon a Stream", "The Folks' Calendar", "The Calendar of Memorable Dates" and other projects. Studies in the Museum are interactive. The Museum's meetings are often carried out as a theatrical performance or a game, as a master-class or a cognitive trip. An ethnographic program "The Keys to Happiness" is very popular with Strezhevoy newly married couples
