At present, the National Pushkin Museum, one of the oldest and largest literary museums in the country, is a unique museum complex which includes: the literary monographic exhibition "Alexander Pushkin. Life and Creative Work"; the Pushkin Apartment Museum; the Lyceum Museum; the Pushkin Country House Museum; the Nekrasov Apartment Museum; and the Derzhavin Estate Museum. This complex had been formed gradually, and each of the museums has its own history. The National Pushkin Museum originates from the Pushkin Museum at the Imperial Alexander (formerly Tsarskoe Selo) Lyceum of which Pushkin was a graduate. It was founded in 1879 by the pupils of the Pushkin course, other graduates and professors, members of the poet's family and his contemporaries.

    In 1997 on the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation the National Pushkin Museum was proclaimed an especially valuable object of the cultural heritage of Russia.

    The Museum's broad collection has been built in the course of several decades. At present, the Museum possesses a unique collection of iconographical, memorial and historical materials featuring Pushkin's epoch, as well as paintings, graphics, sculpture and pieces of applied arts by the prominent artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Not limited to Pushkin's life and creative work, the museum complex became storage of various documents on Russian history and culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It invites visitors to discover unique materials related to the life of Russia's greatest poet, his environment, his predecessors and followers; it offers interesting lectures, lessons for children, the widest range of educational programs and other activities
