The first Local history Private museum in Kansk was based by Dmitriy Semenovich Kargopolov in 1912. In basis of museum's stocks are entered his private collections. The most interesting were materials about the local archaeology, paleontology, productions of Russian brassy artistic casting - icons, crosses and numismatics. In 1922 in basis of these collections appeared "The Museum of Local region", it's collection consisted of 6400 units of keeping.

    Nowadays, in the stocks are kept more than 30 thousands museum's things. The ethnographical collection is bright illustration of the history of Kansk and Kansk region. The most largest collection in the museum it's complete works of written sources, where exists the documents from the end of XVIII century to nowadays, also manuscript and old-printed books. The collection of graphic art is unique. The special value of art stock compose icons, which appeared after closing town's temples and were acquired by the museum from private persons.

    In the museum there is a scientific library with the stock more than 5 thousands books about the history of Siberia, geography, ethnography, archaeology, art and reference publications.
