Description:
The Sergei Kirov Museum is one of the most unique monuments of the Stalin epoch. It was the largest museum dedicated to a Communist Party leader in Leningrad. Second only to Vladimir Lenin. Opened november 8, 1938, it was originally located in the Kshesinskaya Mansion оn 1/3 Kronverksky Prospect (formerly Masxim Gorky Prospect).

From 1926 to 1934, Kirov lived in apartment # 20,26/28 Kamennoostroovsky Prospect. In March of 1955, it was made into his museum.

The building on 26/28 Kamennoostrovsky Prospect is located in the historic center of St. Petersburg. This tenement house, one of the biggest in pre-Revolutionary St. Petersburg, was commissioned for "The First Russian Insurance Society". It was built in 1911-1914 by Leontiy, Alexander, Yuliy Benois, and Alexander Gunst. After the Revolution, the best apartments were given to local Party leaders. In April of 1926, Sergei Kirov moved into apartment #20.

Kirov's memorial five-room flat is remarkable for its collection of authentic personal belongings and almost entirely intact interior elements. Visitors included: Stalin, Bukharin, Kuibyshev, Orjonikidze, and Voroshilov.

From 1926 to 1934, Kirov headed the Leningrad Communist Party organization. He was Stalin's closest friend and associate. His tragic death, the circumstances of which remain unknown to this day, triggered the bloodiest round of Stalin's terror and repression.

The apartment offers the chance to learn about daily life of a Party leader of the 1920-1930s.

There are the gifts presented by Leningrad workers during the first Five-Year Plan, the speeches of Kirov and other Party leaders from Stalin's circle, and Kirov's personal music collection.

The Museum includes exhibitions that reflect the social, economic, political, and cultural aspects of Leningrad life in the 1920-1930s. One of the rooms presents Kirov's fully reconstructed study as it was in the Smolny, which was subsequently used by all city administrators.
