The Museum was founded in 1921. It was plundered by fascists in 1943.

    During the post-war time there were gathered the new collections for which the modern building was built in 1982. The exposition is executed with the high artistic standard and consists of three parts.

    There are four diorams in the division of "Nature" named "The Seasons' with the picturesque linens by Academician Frents; the animal's and plant's world, geological history and minerals are presented there.

    In the division of "History" there are the unique archaeological memorials, the ancient arms, the old-printed books and family relics of the poets F.Tuoutchev and A.Tolstoy and the singer A.Vyaltseva; there are materials about Bryansk inhabitants who were taking part in Kulikovo battle, in Northern War, about Bryansk Shipyard and the still-works of the region.

    In the division of the modern history there are the relics of guerilla movement, Dyatikovo crystal works, personal things of spaceman Afanasiev.

    Every year the museum has 20-30 exhibitions of different subjects. There are 178 000 exhibits of the basic Fund only in the Museum's Fund. The museum carries out the archaelogical excavations, publishes the collections of works and researches on archaeology, genealogy and Bryansk regional history.
